The Venetian Republic in 1805

My own attempt at a map in the style of -- based on his tutorial at [link] and adapted for Gimp and Inkscape.

Basically, Napoleon does not invade Venice for two reasons -- Directoire agents and Venetian nationalists successfully stage a small revolution in the ancient Republic, which ends in reforms and an alliance with the French Republic, and the General Bonparte himself has a Venetian mistress in Milan who is related to a Venetian revolutionary society and manages to get him see that Venice really isn't that oppressive. This makes Venice a client republic of sorts, though much more independant than her neighbours. She still needs French support to hold back the Austrians, and is barely managing to rebuild her navy.
